Jazz-lovers Can Look Forward to 10 Days of Outstanding Music This Month
If you’re into jazz – or if you are just looking for something fun and different to do in the culture and music scene over the next few weeks – then the 2012 TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival is for you! The Winnipeg Jazz Festival, hosted by Jazz Winnipeg, has been taking place since June 1990. It has become a much-loved tradition in Winnipeg and an enjoyable musical series for people across the city.
As a non-profit organization, Jazz Winnipeg’s mission is to be a leader in furthering an appreciation of jazz music through presentation, promotion and outreach. Not only does the organization produce the annual Winnipeg Jazz Festival, but it also puts on concerts and workshops year-round.
Musical Genres in the Festival Offer an Eclectic Mix of Shows
This year’s 10-day jazz festival is taking place from Thursday, June 14 to Saturday, June 23. The line-up of artists who will be performing at this year’s festival includes, among others:
- Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers
- The Liptonians
- Moses Mayes featuring Maiko Watson
- Elizabeth Shepherd
- The Antlers
Although it’s called a “jazz” festival, the artists range from specializing in jazz to indie rock to R & B to Latin to funk music, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Local musicians from Winnipeg, as well as artists across Canada and the United States, will be performing during the festival.
There’s also a mix of venues – from free shows at Old Market Square to concerts at the Pyramid Caberet, the Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club and others. The festival kicks off with four days of free events, but if you want to attend the shows for the entire 10 days, you can get an all-inclusive Club Pass for $75 and see as many as you like.
Or, if the concerts you want to see all take place on the same day, you can purchase a one-day Club Wristband – week night wristbands are $25 (valid June 18 – 22), and the weekend wristband is $30 (valid on June 23 only). Want to bring your kids along to share your musical taste with them and give them a wonderful cultural experience in the heart of downtown Winnipeg? No problem! Just call 989-4656 to find out more about the Tickets for Kids program and reserve your seats.
